“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.”— 1 Corinthians 3:6–7 (ESV)
Spiritual Renewal Reflection
Some people have a green thumb. They can plant a seed, add a dash of water, pull a few weeds, and seemingly overnight, a beautiful fruit tree is heavy with bright red apples. Other people are natural-born teachers who can draw out the best in their students.
But no matter how talented a person may be in cultivating the potential of plants or people, only God can take a soul born dead in sin and breathe new life--spiritual renewal into it. Every person must have a seed of life planted by someone—perhaps another will water it, still another will pull the weeds.
But it is only through the Spirit’s power that those seeds grow into mature ambassadors of Christ.
I remember my dad telling me about his early childhood in the 1930s, when dust storms swept across Oklahoma’s farmland and made survival nearly impossible. He recalled the thick layers of grit that blanketed everything. You couldn’t stay clean, and sometimes you could barely breathe.
Like so many, our family tried farming until the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression forced them westward in search of hope. Starting over was not easy, but that “new life” they carved out in California created opportunities I never could have dreamed of if they had stayed behind. Their willingness to leave behind barren land made a way for fresh soil where something living could take root.
Spiritual Renewal: Lessons from the Dust Bowl
That lesson echoes in our spiritual journey. We are all offered the hope of spiritual renewal—a new life that doesn’t come from geography or circumstance, but from surrendering to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. And once that spiritual renewal takes root, true growth follows.
God invites us not only to receive His renewing work in our hearts, but also to join Him as laborers in His field. Some are called to scatter gospel seeds. Some are water-bearers, carrying the Living Water of Christ. Others help pull the weeds so that the Son’s light can reach more deeply into a life.
God’s lessons are everywhere: in the dust of abandoned fields, in stories of loss and resilience, in endings that open into new beginnings. The only question is—what story will your life tell? Somewhere, someone is waiting for the seed that only you were uniquely gifted to sow.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of spiritual renewal in Christ. Help me be faithful in planting, watering, and nurturing the seeds You entrust me with. Let Your Spirit bring growth in the lives I touch, and lead me to someone in need of new hope today. Amen.
