The Pivotal Question
If you've ever felt like an alien in your own church while your love for Jesus burns brighter than ever, this post is for you.

The Sunday Morning Blues
Picture this: You're sitting in church, surrounded by fellow believers, listening to worship music that once moved you to tears. But something feels... off. Not wrong, exactly. Just not quite right. You love Jesus deeply—that hasn't changed. Your faith is solid, your commitment real. But you find yourself thinking:
"Is this all there is?"
"Why do I feel so spiritually hungry after being 'fed'?"
"Am I the only one who wants to go deeper?"
If those thoughts sound familiar, you're not alone. And you're definitely not backsliding.
You might just be a Christ insider who's been looking for home in all the wrong places.
Two Types of Spiritual Homelessness
After 20 years of feeling like a church outsider while remaining passionate about following Jesus, I've discovered something profound: there are two very different types of spiritual homelessness.
Type 1: Church Outsiders
These are people who've walked away from faith itself. They may have been hurt by the church, disillusioned by hypocrisy, or simply decided Christianity isn't for them. Their issue is with Jesus, the Gospel, or the foundational truths of Christianity.
Type 2: Christ Insiders
These are people who love Jesus more than ever but struggle to find their place in contemporary church culture. They haven't walked away from faith at all, in fact, they've walked deeper into it. They're not rejecting Christ; they're hungry for more authentic ways to follow Him.
The difference is crucial: Church outsiders need evangelism. Christ insiders need family, whether inside a building or outside on the pilgrim's path.
Signs You're a Christ Insider
You Ask Different Questions
"How can I practice God's presence in ordinary moments?" (not just "How do I get blessed?")
"What does it mean to die to self?" (not just "How can God help my life go better?")
"How do the saints throughout history connect with God?" (not just "What's the latest Christian trend?")
You Crave Spiritual Depth
You're drawn to contemplative prayer, spiritual formation, or mystical writers
You want to understand suffering as spiritual growth, not just something to avoid
You're more interested in being transformed than entertained
You read books that are 300+ years old and find them more relevant than this year's bestsellers
You Feel Spiritually Bilingual
You can speak "contemporary Christian" but it feels like a second language
You resonate more with ancient practices than modern programs
You're comfortable with mystery, paradox, and "not knowing"
You prefer contemplation to constant activity
You Experience Sunday Morning Displacement
You love worship but crave silence
You appreciate sermons but hunger for deeper spiritual direction
You enjoy fellowship but need solitude to recharge
You respect church programming but feel called to simpler expressions
The Bridge to Contemplative Christianity
Here's what I've learned: You're not a misfit. You're just discovering contemplative Christianity and looking for your position on the Bridge.
For over 400 years, authentic Christ-followers have walked a bridge that spans different spiritual temperaments within contemplative Christianity—all leading to the same destination: deep, transformational intimacy with Jesus. Some are contemplative mystics, others are practical evangelists, still others are prophetic voices. But they're all family.
This bridge includes:
Brother Lawrence washing dishes while conversing with God
A.W. Tozer pursuing passionate intimacy with the Divine
D.L. Moody sharing simple, direct faith with ordinary people
Dietrich Bonhoeffer living costly grace in the face of evil
Eugene Peterson practicing long obedience in the same direction
Different temperaments. Same Savior. Same destination.
Your Diagnostic Moment
So here's the crucial question: Are you a church outsider or a Christ insider?
You're a Church Outsider if:
Your issue is with Jesus, the Gospel, or core Christian beliefs
You're walking away from faith itself
You're searching for Jesus and wondering if He's real, if He cares, or if following Him makes any difference
Note: If you are searching and wondering, you're welcome here too. Many of us walked through seasons of doubt and searching before discovering the Bridge. Start with our community, explore the questions honestly, and let fellow pilgrims help you find your way to Christ.
You're a Christ Insider if:
Your love for Jesus is deeper than ever
You're hungry for authentic spiritual formation
You feel spiritually homeless while remaining faithful
You're looking for your family among fellow pilgrims
Welcome Home, Pilgrim
If you're a Christ insider, I have good news: You're not crazy. You're not alone. And you're definitely not broken.
You're part of a glorious tradition of believers who've refused to settle for Sunday-morning faith and discovered that God is waiting for conversation in every ordinary moment of life.
You don't need fixing, you need family.
You don't need converting, but you do need connecting.
In short, you need more authentic ways to live your faith.
